The Kenai Peninsula recently received $45,175 through the 2010 Snowmobile Trail Grant and Grooming program.

The funds, which were collected through snowmachine registration fees, were allocated for development and maintenance of public trails and safety projects such as trail grooming, marking and signage.

Trail grants included:

• $15,000 for an Iron Dog Snowmachine Safety Expo in February 2010.

• $10,557 for Mat-Su Borough trail marking and signing.

• $15,000 for a snowmachine helmet safety incentive campaign.

Grooming pool allocations for 2010 of $221,443 were distributed between six areas: Mat-Su, $126,268; Chugach, $6,000; Northern Alaska, $36,000; Kenai Peninsual, $45,175; Southeast Alaska, $6,000; and Wood-Tikchik State Park, $2,000.

Continuation of the grant program depends upon annual appropriations by the Legislature of snowmachine registration fees.
