Seward standout Brett Chase just missed a top-25 overall finish at the Region III Ski Championships last weekend in Soldotna.

Chase placed 27th in the boys Skimeister chase, clocking a 15-kilometer combined time of 48 minutes, 39 seconds to pace the Seward boys. Friday's race was a 5-K skate and Saturday was 10-K classical.

Teammates Samy Pfluger (32nd, 49:54), Austin Gillespie (33rd, 50:23) and Joe Nyholm (36th, 50:56) were close behind. Seward's Miles Knotek was 58th in 57:27 and Gabe Esposito was 63rd in 1:02:39.

Kenai's Travis Semmens won the boys Skimeister title in 41:24.

The Seward boys teams finished eighth out of 10 teams, just 40 seconds behind seventh place.

The Seahawks had two representatives in the girls Skimeister hunt, with Amanda Olsen covering the 10.5-K in 50th in 49:25 and Maggie Herbert crossing in 51st in 50:16.

Kenai's Kailey Mucha was the champion in 33:37, her record fourth straight Region III title.

The ASAA State Ski Championships begin today and continue through Saturday in Fairbanks.

Basketball teams lose to ACS

Meg Berry pumped in 13 points and Holly Ganser added eight points, but it wasn't enough to save the Seward girls basketball team during a 50-36 loss Saturday at Anchorage Christian.

The difference in the game was the first and third quarters, during which ACS outscored the Seahawks 27-13 (the margin of victory).

On the boys side, ACS used a big fourth quarter to propel the Lions to a 53-40 victory over Seward.

ACS pulled away with a 20-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Andrew Buchanan and Michael Thorn each scored 10 points to lead the Seahawks.
