Seward High School volleyball player Chelsey Clarke can't remember the last time the Seahawks went to state.

All she knows is they are going this year.

Seward punched its ticket to the ASAA Class 3A state championships after finishing second at the Southcentral region tournament in Anchorage.

"We're all really excited," Clarke said. "It's pretty exciting bringing such a young team to state."

Clarke, a junior, is a big reason why Seward is back on the big stage for the first time since 2004.

The first-team all-region playmaker came up big in the pivotal match against Anchorage Christian, sparking a 26-24, 25-22, 25-19 victory.

Clarke delivered 12 kills, three solo blocks and two aces on serves.

With win-or-go-home stakes on the line, she played with confidence.

"We knew we had to pull it together and finish strong," Clarke said. "We all went in there calm, collective and knew we had the opportunity in our hands."

Maggie Fleming, a first-team all-region player, added 11 kills while Tessa Adelmann, Michaela Atherton and Gretchen Lindquist each played solid on both sides of the ball.

Seward advanced to the region championship match against undefeated and top-ranked Grace Christian, which benefited from the home-court advantage to knock off the Seahawks 25-22, 25-12, 25-16.

"The scores of the final two games are not indicative of the quality of play that was apparent on both sides of the net," said Seward coach Angie Hammer, "as volleys with incredible play, amazing saves and hard hits were seen out on both teams."

Fleming and Clarke combined for 16 kills.

Many of the Seahawks were honored on the all-region team.

In addition to Clake and Fleming, Lindquist was named to the first team. Senior Jeannette Butts was picked for the second team and Atherton, a senior, was named to the all-region sportsmanship team.
