Seward's historic railcar for sale

The Seward Chamber of Commerce, Conference and Visitors Bureau, announced Friday, Nov. 2, that the historic railcar located on the corner of Jefferson Street and Third Avenue is for sale.

The chamber's board of directors' decision follows efforts to determine alternative uses in partnership with a community task force, according to a press release from the chamber.

The task force evaluated a wide variety of options that were sensitive to Seward's history, past involvement by residents, and overall community sentiment.

While many ideas were proposed, the chamber did not receive any recommendation that included a feasible, long-term management plan for sustaining the recommended use, including a funding mechanism for addressing ongoing maintenance needs.

The railcar was built in 1916 as a diner and purchased by the Alaska Railroad in 1935. It was used by the railroad through the early 1960s and was donated to the city in 1964.

Throughout the years, community groups have maintained the car and used it for various purposes.

The railcar includes a service counter top and counter seating. In addition, the railcar is plumbed, has electrical wiring and phone wiring in place and is set up for propane-based heat.

Offers to purchase the railcar are being accepted through Nov. 15 in the form of sealed bids.

The railcar is being sold as-is, and bidders are responsible for all costs associated with removing the railcar from its current location.

Bids must include the purchase offer and a proposed date by which the railcar will be moved, including the name of the contractor or business that will be responsible for the removal. Bidder and the bidder's contractor are responsible for any city permits required for removal activities.

To submit a bid or for more information, contact the Seward Chamber of Commerce at (907) 224-8051, P.O. Box 749, Seward, AK 99664.
